Bulltron lithium batteries (LiFePO4) – maximum performance for modern on-board electrical systems
Bulltron lithium batteries based on lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) are today regarded as the most advanced solution for powering boats, yachts, motorhomes and expedition vehicles. They offer significantly higher performance, longer service life and better energy efficiency than conventional lead-acid, AGM or gel batteries – and are designed specifically for demanding systems with inverters, charge boosters, solar systems and high-current loads.
In brief: Bulltron LiFePO4 batteries deliver more usable energy, weigh up to 70 % less than comparable lead batteries, last several thousand charge cycles and protect themselves with an integrated battery management system – the complete solution for maximum self-sufficiency on board and on the road.
Why Bulltron? – The reasons for this lithium battery
Bulltron batteries are built for mobile use on boats and in vehicles. They combine LiFePO4 cells rated for several thousand charge cycles, an integrated BMS that protects against overcharging, deep discharge and short circuits, an active 5 A cell balancer that equalises the cells during normal operation, and a P-Bus interface that reports state of charge and temperature directly to philippi monitors. The features in detail:
- Active 5 A cell balancer instead of a passive balancer – cell balancing during operation, not only at full charge
- P-Bus interface for real-time data transfer to compatible monitors and energy management systems
- Integrated BMS with full protection against overcharging, deep discharge, overcurrent, short circuit and overtemperature
- High-quality LiFePO4 cells with several thousand charge cycles – far more than AGM or gel batteries
- Thermally stable cell chemistry – LiFePO4 is regarded as the safest lithium technology for use on board
Fast charging thanks to high charge currents
A key advantage of Bulltron lithium batteries is their ability to accept charge currents of up to 1C. This means a 100 Ah battery can be fully charged in about one hour – a lead battery takes many times longer.
All common energy sources can be used to full effect: alternator, charge booster, solar system, shore power charger and generator charge the Bulltron battery quickly and efficiently – without the long absorption phases that lead batteries need.
Full power down to the last amp-hour
Unlike lead-acid batteries, the voltage of a Bulltron LiFePO4 battery stays almost constant throughout the discharge. Full power is therefore available until shortly before the battery is empty – connected devices and loads are supplied evenly to the end.
With continuous discharge currents of 1C to 3C and short-term peaks of up to 10C, Bulltron batteries are ideal for power-hungry loads:
Inverters, air conditioning, coffee machines, anchor windlasses, bow thrusters, induction hobs and other high-power loads are no problem for a Bulltron LiFePO4 battery.
Up to 70 % less weight and space than lead batteries
Bulltron lithium batteries have a much higher energy density than conventional battery technologies. Weight and installation space can be reduced considerably – a decisive advantage wherever every kilogram counts.
A concrete example: a 210 Ah Bulltron LiFePO4 battery weighs only about 23 kg, while a comparable lead battery weighs around 70 kg. That is a saving of almost 50 kg at the same capacity.
The advantages at a glance: more payload, less weight on board, space-saving installation, more energy per kilogram.
Almost the entire capacity is usable
To preserve their service life, lead batteries should usually only be discharged to around 50 % of their capacity; with Bulltron LiFePO4 batteries almost the entire stored energy can be used. This means a 100 Ah Bulltron battery effectively delivers about twice as much usable energy as a 100 Ah lead battery.
Low self-discharge and exceptionally long service life
Bulltron lithium batteries have a very low self-discharge of less than 3 % per month. They can be stored partially charged for long periods without damage or loss of capacity – ideal for seasonal use on boats and yachts.
With several thousand charge cycles, Bulltron LiFePO4 batteries last much longer than AGM, gel or lead-acid batteries and significantly reduce the total cost of ownership in the long run.
Active 5 A cell balancer – a technical advantage over cheaper alternatives
Bulltron lithium batteries have an active 5 A balancer that continuously equalises the cell voltages. This is a major difference to cheaper batteries with only passive balancers:
| Feature | Passive balancer | Active 5 A balancer (Bulltron) |
|---|---|---|
| When balancing takes place | Only at full charge | Continuously during operation |
| Effectiveness | Limited | Much higher |
| Effect on service life | Low | Positive, maximises cell health |
| Energy loss | Higher (heat) | Lower (active redistribution) |
The individual cells therefore stay optimally matched – which further increases the performance, efficiency and service life of the battery.
Intelligent battery management system (BMS)
The battery management system (BMS) integrated in every Bulltron LiFePO4 battery monitors and protects the lithium cells permanently and fully automatically:
- Protection against overcharging
- Protection against deep discharge
- Cell temperature monitoring
- Protection against overcurrent
- Protection against short circuit
- Cell voltage monitoring
This ensures safe and reliable operation even under demanding conditions – without manual intervention.
P-Bus interface – real-time data for energy management systems
Thanks to the integrated P-Bus interface, key battery data can be transmitted directly to compatible philippi monitors and energy management systems. State of charge, voltage, current, temperature and remaining capacity are available in real time – for complete monitoring of the entire energy system via the philippi P-Bus system monitor PSS, PSM2 or PSL.
Which applications are Bulltron LiFePO4 batteries suitable for?
Bulltron LiFePO4 batteries are suitable wherever a lot of energy is needed with little weight and space: as service batteries on sailing yachts and motor boats, for self-sufficient power in motorhomes and caravans, in expedition vehicles and in off-grid systems with solar or wind power. They are particularly worthwhile with high-current loads such as inverters, anchor windlasses or bow thrusters.
- Sailing yachts & motor boats – service and starter batteries, high-current loads
- Motorhomes & caravans – self-sufficient power for longer trips
- Expedition vehicles – maximum energy with minimum weight and space
- Off-grid applications – stand-alone systems with solar and wind

Frequently asked questions about Bulltron LiFePO4 batteries
Are Bulltron LiFePO4 batteries safe?
Yes. Lithium iron phosphate is the most thermally stable lithium chemistry: the risk of thermal runaway is much lower than with other lithium cells, and unlike lead batteries the cells do not gas during operation. In addition, the integrated BMS monitors the voltage, current and temperature of every cell and disconnects automatically in the event of overcharging, deep discharge or a short circuit.
Can I keep using my existing charging equipment?
Usually yes, provided every charging source can be set for lithium. Chargers, charge boosters and alternator regulators need a LiFePO4 charging profile set to the manufacturer's charge voltage. For the alternator, an external regulator or a charge booster is also advisable, because otherwise it would have to deliver the lithium battery's high charge current continuously. We are happy to check your system in advance.
What is the difference between an active and a passive balancer?
A passive balancer only equalises the cell voltages at full charge by burning off surplus energy from the fuller cells as heat. Bulltron's active 5 A balancer moves energy from fuller to emptier cells – continuously during operation and at up to 5 A. The cells stay evenly charged, the usable capacity stays higher and the cells age more evenly.
How long does a Bulltron LiFePO4 battery last?
Bulltron LiFePO4 batteries achieve several thousand charge cycles. Depending on the usage profile, depth of discharge and temperature, this corresponds to a service life of around 8 to 15 years or more. AGM and gel batteries typically last 3 to 5 years under comparable use, because they age much faster with deep discharge and partial charging.
Can I connect Bulltron batteries in series or in parallel?
Yes, both are possible but need planning. Connected in parallel, batteries increase capacity; in series, they increase voltage, for example to 24 V or 48 V. Only combine batteries of the same type, capacity and age, charge them to the same voltage before connecting them, and use connecting cables of equal length so that the current is shared evenly.
Which monitors are compatible with the P-Bus interface?
The P-Bus interface of Bulltron batteries is compatible with the philippi system monitors PSS, PSM2 and PSL and with the entire philippi P-Bus energy management system. State of charge, voltage, current, temperature and remaining capacity appear there directly, and the battery can be monitored in one display together with chargers, tanks and loads.
