Calculate battery capacity

In short

Nominal capacity = (Daily balance × Surcharge × Self-sufficiency days) ÷ Permissible depth of discharge. The daily balance for each consumer is calculated from current times runtime — quiescent current included, as it runs 24 hours a day. Lead can be discharged by about half, lithium significantly deeper. A 20 to 30 percent surcharge is the norm, not a luxury.

Ihre Verbraucher

Je Zeile ein Verbraucher: Stromaufnahme in Ampere und die realistische Laufzeit pro Tag. Den Ruhestrom der Anlage nicht vergessen — er läuft 24 Stunden.

The result is a planning value, not an acceptance test. The data sheets of the components used and the applicable standards are authoritative.

The Balance Sheet Is the Real Work

The size of the battery bank results from the daily balance, which for each consumer is the current consumption multiplied by the realistic operating time. If the type plate shows a power rating instead of a current, divide by the on-board voltage: 90 watts at 12 volts is 7.5 amperes.

What Is Often Missing

Quiescent current is the item almost nobody plans for, and it becomes one of the largest over 24 hours: monitors, radio systems in standby, alarms, gas detectors, chargers without load. Also underestimated: cooling in summer, whose pulsed operating time increases significantly with the outside temperature, and the losses of an inverter, which also draws current in idle mode.

Distinguish Between Driving and Mooring Time

While driving, the alternator charges, but during mooring time, only what is in the battery bank counts. Those who lump both cases into one column are planning for a state that doesn't exist. For the size of the battery bank, mooring time is the decisive factor.

Days of Autonomy vs. Charging Capacity

Every additional day without charging doubles or triples the required capacity. From about two days, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in the charging side—solar, a charge booster, or a larger alternator—than to increase the storage capacity accordingly.

Measuring Beats Calculating

A calculated balance sheet is an educated guess with structure. A shunt in the negative line of the battery bank counts ampere-hours, and a week of normal operation provides a value that no table can match.
