In brief: The right cross-section depends on current, cable length and system voltage. The cable configurator calculates it in one step – with fuse rating, fuse type and a finished parts list for assembly.
The range
- Weldyflex high-current cable (red/black) – highly flexible for battery and high-current cables
- Single-core H07V-K cables in red, black and blue, also tinned (H07V-K-VZ)
- Two-core H05VV-VZ cable, tinned
- Multi-core cables for DC and AC
- Shore power cables H07BQ-F yellow (PUR) and H07RN-F black
- LIYY control and data cable and coaxial cables RG 58 C/U and RG 213 U
Installation in the engine room
If cables are installed in the engine room (ambient temperature 60 °C), the maximum permissible current stated for 70 °C must be multiplied by a factor of 0.75. How cross-section, voltage drop and fusing relate is explained in the Academy article Calculating cable cross-section. Matching cable lugs and crimping tools can be found under cable connectors.
Frequently asked questions about on-board cables
Which cable cross-section do I need?
The cross-section depends on the current, the cable length for the outgoing and return conductor and the permissible voltage drop. The longer the cable and the lower the system voltage, the larger the cross-section must be. The cable configurator calculates this in one step and also gives the right fuse and a parts list.
Tinned or bare copper?
Tinned copper strands are the better choice on board. The tin layer protects each individual strand against corrosion from humid, salty air, which turns bare copper black over time and increases resistance. The range therefore includes single- and two-core cables in tinned versions too.
What do I need to consider in the engine room?
The engine room is considerably warmer, and warm cables may carry less current. At an ambient temperature of 60 °C, the permissible current stated for 70 °C must be multiplied by a factor of 0.75. Plan a larger cross-section there than in cool areas.
Which shore power cable is the right one?
Both cables connect the dock socket to the boat. The yellow H07BQ-F has a PUR sheath, is abrasion-resistant, stays flexible in the cold and is easy to see on the dock. The black H07RN-F is a robust rubber-sheathed cable. Both are suitable for outdoor use; matching plugs can be found among the shore power connectors.
Which cable for battery and high current?
For battery cables and high-current loads such as inverters, anchor windlasses or bow thrusters, the highly flexible Weldyflex high-current cable in red and black is suitable. It consists of very fine strands, is easy to route and crimp even in large cross-sections and is therefore resistant to vibration.
