BMS
Kurz definiert
Battery management system: the electronics in a lithium battery that monitor cell voltages, currents and temperatures, control balancing and, in an emergency, disconnect the battery from the on-board system.
In der Praxis
The disconnect function is both protection and risk: if the BMS disconnects under load, the battery vanishes from the on-board system instantly. A running alternator then has nowhere to deliver its current, and the resulting voltage spike regularly destroys diodes and regulators.
That is why every lithium retrofit needs a protection module on the alternator — or a setup in which charging goes via a lead-acid battery and a DC-DC charger.
