Balancing
Kurz definiert
Equalising the state of charge of the individual cells in a lithium battery. Without it, the cells drift apart and the weakest one limits the usable capacity of the whole battery.
In der Praxis
The battery management system usually handles balancing at the top end of charging. If a lithium battery bank is never properly fully charged, no balancing takes place either — the cells drift apart even though the battery works.
With lead-acid, the counterpart is equalisation charging at increased voltage. Whether and how often it is permitted depends on the battery type and is stated in the data sheet.
