Cathodic protection
Kurz definiert
A method in which the metal to be protected is made electrically into the cathode and therefore no longer goes into solution — either via sacrificial anodes or via a regulated impressed-current system.
In der Praxis
The passive variant with sacrificial anodes is the normal case on board: simple, low-maintenance, self-regulating within the limits of its size. Impressed-current systems are found on large steel ships.
Too much protection is also a problem: on aluminium components, excessive cathodic protection can destroy the protective layer. Anode quantity and material should be planned as part of the build, not increased afterwards.
