Insulation monitor
Kurz definiert
A device that continuously monitors the insulation resistance of a system and reports when it falls below a limit — that is, before a fault leads to tripping.
In der Praxis
The difference from the residual current device: that reacts when current is already flowing. The insulation monitor warns beforehand, when the insulation deteriorates — due to moisture, ageing or a chafe point.
On board it makes sense mainly in systems with an unearthed network and for equipment with high availability requirements. In the usual recreational craft installation, residual current protection takes over this task.
