Conductor cross-section
Kurz definiert
The cross-sectional area of the current-carrying copper strands of a flexible cable, stated in square millimetres. It determines voltage drop and current-carrying capacity.
In der Praxis
Fine-stranded cables are used on board because vibration and movement break rigid conductors. The stated cross-section refers to the copper, not to the outer diameter of the cable.
The required size follows from two conditions: the permitted voltage drop — usually the tighter one on board — and the current-carrying capacity for the chosen installation method. The larger of the two applies.
