Find the right alternator

In short

The sensible charging current results from capacity multiplied by the battery bank's charge acceptance: wet cell batteries up to 25 percent, gel up to 35, standard AGM up to 40, TPPL and carbon foam AGM up to 100. 300 Ah AGM thus result in about 120 A. The belt sets the second limit — a single V-belt carries about 100 A at 12 volts, but only 45 A at 24 volts. An external multi-stage regulator with two temperature sensors is essential in any case.

Passende Lichtmaschine anfragen

The result is a planning value, not an acceptance test. The data sheets of the components used and the applicable standards are authoritative.

The Battery Sets the Upper Limit

Each battery technology only accepts a certain percentage of its capacity as charging current: wet cell batteries up to 25 percent, gel up to 35, standard AGM up to 40, TPPL and carbon foam AGM up to 100. The maximum sensible alternator current is determined by capacity multiplied by charge acceptance. If the alternator is smaller, charging takes longer — it doesn't cause any damage. If it's larger, the power simply won't be drawn.

The Belt Also Plays a Role

Higher charging power means higher mechanical power, and the belt must transmit this. A single V-belt with 1/2 inch is at its limit at around 100 amperes in a 12-volt system — and already at about 45 amperes in a 24-volt system, because the same current here means double the power. Beyond that, a double V-belt or serpentine belt system is needed, usually via a conversion kit for the pulleys. This should be part of the planning, not an afterthought.

No Charger Without a Regulator

The alternator alone only maintains a fixed voltage. Only an external multi-stage regulator turns this into a charge with a characteristic curve for each battery type, temperature compensation, and appropriate final phase. Every regulator kit includes two temperature sensors — one on the alternator, one on the battery. The one on the alternator is the only protection against it being continuously operated at its limit.

What the Calculator Doesn't Know

Whether a specific alternator fits your engine depends on the mounting type — single foot or double foot, spindle or saddle mount. A photo of the installed alternator including its mounting and pulley clarifies this question faster than any description.
