The battery selector switch BWS 353 from the Blue Sea Systems e-series selects between two isolated battery banks and additionally protects the alternator's diode bridge thanks to an integrated Alternator Field Disconnect (AFD) function, should the switch accidentally be set to OFF while the engine is running.

What is the purpose of the AFD function in the BWS 353?
If a battery selector switch is accidentally set to OFF while the engine is running, this can damage the alternator's diodes because the excitation field can no longer be de-energized. The Alternator Field Disconnect (AFD) function integrated in the BWS 353 specifically disconnects the alternator's excitation circuit in this case, thus protecting the diode bridge from consequential damage.
This makes the BWS 353 particularly suitable for boats and off-road vehicles where the switch is operated during ongoing operation and additional protection for the alternator is desired.
