Find suitable fuel sender

In short

Which tank sender fits is determined by five pieces of information: the liquid in the tank, the tank depth, the material, whether a sender is already installed, and whether drilling into the tank is permitted. The question of drilling and the existing sender determine the possible access. The finder names the sender and installation length, deducts the dead zone, and lists installation parts, interface, and display. Below that are the alternatives with the reason why they are not in the first place.

Ihre Angaben

Die ersten fünf Fragen entscheiden, was überhaupt in Frage kommt. Die übrigen verfeinern die Auswahl. Das Ergebnis nennt einen Vorschlag mit Baulänge, Einbauteilen und Anzeige — und darunter die Alternativen mit dem Grund, warum sie nicht an erster Stelle stehen.

The result is a planning value, not an acceptance test. The data sheets of the components used and the applicable standards are authoritative.

What the finder delivers

A specific suggestion rather than a product list: the sender that suits the liquid, the tank and the installation, with length, the mounting parts needed and a matching display. Below it are all other senders for the same liquid — including those that do not fit, each with the reason. This shows you which condition you would have to relax for another solution to become possible.

The liquid decides first

Every sender is approved for certain liquids, and that rules out most of the selection. A water sender does not belong in diesel, sewage tanks need senders that cope with deposits, and petrol requires explosion protection. Only once the approval is right is it worth looking at design and display.

Drill or measure from outside

Whether the tank may be drilled is the question that rules out the most. If you can make an opening in the tank top, you have a free choice. If a sender is already fitted, the opening exists and can usually be reused — often together with the display. Without an opening, only sensors that measure from outside through the tank wall remain. They are more expensive and depend on material and wall thickness; through metal walls they only work with an additional adapter.

Which type for what

The ultrasonic sender measures contactlessly from above and has no moving parts in the tank. Directly below it is a dead zone of 2.5 centimetres where it does not measure — the top remainder is therefore shown as full. Immersion tube senders go into the tank from above and have a fine resolution; with them, the length must match the tank depth. Pressure probes measure the hydrostatic pressure at the bottom and cope well with irregular tank shapes, but they need an interface and cost several times as much. Float switches do not give a level, only a switching point — full or empty.

The length

What counts is the clear internal height, from the bottom to the top. For immersion tubes the finder chooses the longest length that still fits, for ultrasonic senders the shortest that covers the depth. Lengths of 20 to 40 centimetres are listed; longer ones are available for deeper tanks, please ask. Measure before ordering: the clear depth, the opening in the top and the free space above it — an immersion tube must be insertable.

Sender and display must match

Round gauge, tank monitor, P-Bus, NMEA 2000 or Bluetooth to the phone: the sender's output must match the display you want, otherwise it shows nothing or something wrong. If an existing display is to stay, check its resistance range first — Europe and the USA use different ranges. In irregularly shaped tanks, the fill height is not proportional to the volume; a display that can learn a calibration curve then gives a much more realistic reading.

Sewage tanks

For sewage tanks, the three-quarter full level must be reported. A dedicated sender with an alarm panel does this — in addition to level measurement, not instead of it.
