Manual LAE 220 CH: Installing and Connecting the Swiss Shore Power Unit

The LAE 220 CH shore power unit is the Swiss version of the LAE 220: it protects the onboard AC 230 V/50 Hz system with an RCBo 13 A residual current/miniature circuit breaker. It is designed for use inside the boat, not outdoors, and a mains indicator light shows the shore power connection. This page summarises the connection, wiring diagram and technical data from the operating manual.

Intended use

The LAE 220 shore power unit provides protection for the onboard AC 230 V/50 Hz system by means of an RCBo 16 A residual current/miniature circuit breaker (Swiss version CH: 13 A). It is designed for use inside the boat, not outdoors. The mains indicator light shows the shore power connection.

The electrical connection is made at the RCBo (RCD/MCB) for phase (L) and neutral (N) and, for the protective earth (PE), via a terminal strip in the housing.

Connection and wiring diagram

Wiring diagram of the LAE 220 and LAE 220 CH shore power units with RCBo, shore input, onboard output and protective earth terminal strip

Connect with a cable cross-section of at least 3 × 2.5 mm²; all conductors in the diagram are 2.5 mm². The diagram in the manual shows the RCBo with 16 A; according to the technical data, an RCBo with 13 A applies to the CH version.

Terminal Function according to the manual
1 Input phase L (shore)
N (input) Input neutral N (shore)
PE Protective earth, via terminal strip in the housing
2 Output phase L (onboard system)
N (output) Output neutral N (onboard system)

Indicator light H1 is connected at the input, in parallel with the AC cables. If the unit is installed more than 3 m from the shore power inlet plug, an additional miniature circuit breaker (MCB) must be installed close to the inlet; the manual names the LAE 205 for this purpose.

Installation notes

  • Work on low-voltage AC 230 V/50 Hz system components may only be carried out by authorised qualified electricians.
  • Make all connections to the shore power unit carefully and in accordance with the technical regulations (DIN EN ISO 13297).
  • The installation manual is part of the component delivery. Keep it in a safe place for later maintenance work and pass it on to any subsequent owners.

Frequently asked questions

Which circuit breaker is fitted in the LAE 220 CH?

According to the manual, the Swiss LAE 220 CH has an RCBo (RCD/MCB) with 13 A and 30 mA, whereas the standard LAE 220 has 16 A. Otherwise the design is the same: phase and neutral at the RCBo, protective earth via a terminal strip in the housing, protection rating IP 65.

What cable cross-section and protection do I need?

The same connection data apply as for the LAE 220: at least 3 × 2.5 mm², with all conductors in the diagram at 2.5 mm². Beyond 3 m from the shore power inlet plug, an additional miniature circuit breaker (MCB) must be installed close to the inlet; the manual names the LAE 205 for this.

May the LAE 220 CH be installed outdoors?

No, the manual provides for the unit only for use inside the boat, not outdoors. The mains indicator light shows the shore power connection. Work on the AC 230 V system may only be carried out by authorised qualified electricians, and installation must comply with the technical regulation DIN EN ISO 13297.
