Resolution and Accuracy: why both matter
The philippi SHE 348 measures from 10 mA — and it is precisely in this range that currents lie that can silently drain a battery bank. A device with a quiescent current of 30 mA draws approximately 0.7 ampere-hours from the battery per day and five per week. A shunt that only measures from around one ampere upwards will not detect this — the bank will still be empty, and the cause will remain undiscoverable.
The second half is the accuracy of ±0.5% across the entire measuring range. The state of charge is not a momentary measurement, but a continuous ampere-hour balance: every single measured value contributes to an ongoing calculation, and measurement errors accumulate over days. Only consistent accuracy across the entire range ensures that the display still matches reality after two weeks.
Starter Battery and Temperature — without a second shunt
The starter battery voltage can be measured directly at the SHE 348 — a second shunt is not necessary for this. This covers the most practically important case: early detection that the starter battery has not been recharged for weeks, for example, because isolation relays or charge converters are no longer working. A second shunt is only needed if a complete current balance with state of charge is also desired for the second bank.
Similarly, the battery temperature is measured directly at the shunt: the TEMP-BT temperature sensor is connected to the SHE 348, and the temperature appears on the monitor in addition to current, voltage, and capacity. A separate temperature interface is not required for this. This is more than just a display: the usable capacity depends on the temperature, and for LiFePO4, charging below freezing is the point at which damage occurs.

Compatibility
The SHE 348 is the basic current measurement for philippi battery monitors BTM2, BLS and BLM2, as well as for the Series 200 switch panels with integrated BTM2 (STV 232, STV 234-2p, STV 236, STV 238, STV 244) and for STV 314 (BLS-Set). The SHE 348 is already included in the BLS-Set and BLM2-Set; it is available separately for retrofitting. For temperature measurement, the TEMP-BT sensor is connected directly to the shunt. If an additional energy source, such as a solar system, is also to be monitored, the SHP 348 energy shunt is used in addition.
