Frequently Asked Questions

Off-road Vehicle Electrics – Briefly Explained.

What all is included in a complete electrical system for an off-road vehicle?

A complete on-board electrical system includes energy storage (battery), charging technology (alternator, solar, shore power), power distribution and protection, as well as monitoring of the battery, tanks, and consumers. Philippi supplies all components from a single source, perfectly matched to each other.

That depends on the vehicle type and the consumers. Most off-road campers and expedition vehicles run on 12 V, while heavier truck-based vehicles often run on 24 V. Our components are available for both on-board voltages.

A charging booster (DC-DC converter) ensures that the leisure battery is reliably charged via the alternator, even with modern, voltage-variable alternators in Euro 6 vehicles. It is almost indispensable, especially for lithium batteries.

Lithium (LiFePO4) offers more usable capacity with less weight and significantly higher cycle stability, but is more expensive to purchase. Lead-acid batteries are cheaper, but heavier and less capable of deep discharge. We will advise you on the right choice for your application profile.

Our products are designed for demanding off-road use and engineered for vibration, dust, and moisture. When planning the installation, we work with you to determine the appropriate protection class and mounting for your vehicle.

The PCU (Power Control Unit) is the central vehicle control system: it displays and operates battery status, tank levels, heating, and other systems via a single display. Instead of many individual switches, you have all functions centrally in view.

With our battery and tank monitors, you can keep an eye on charge level, voltage, current, and fill levels at all times, either directly on the central display or via the PCU.

Yes. Our charging technology uses multiple charging sources in parallel and prioritizes them intelligently, so that your battery is optimally charged regardless of the currently available source.

All circuits are protected by modern circuit breakers and residual current devices. Our control panels (Series 100, 200, 700) provide standard-compliant protection for each individual consumer circuit.

A combi inverter combines an inverter and a charger in one device: It powers 230 V consumers from the battery and simultaneously charges from shore power. Useful as soon as you don't want to do without household appliances on the road.

Yes. The system has a modular design. You can start with the core of the battery and distribution and add charging technology, monitors, or additional circuits later, without replacing the existing system.

Many components are designed for DIY installation and are well-documented. For more complex systems or initial installations, we recommend a specialist company; our support team is available to assist with any questions.

Yes. Our experts will advise you personally and develop an individual energy concept tailored to your vehicle, application profile, and budget, free of charge and without obligation as part of a consultation.
