The Balmar Spike Ground Protection (TSP-12 for 12-volt and TSP-24 for 24-volt electrical systems) protects the sensitive diodes and internal regulator of your alternator from harmful voltage spikes. Such spikes typically occur when a lithium battery management system (BMS) abruptly disconnects the battery from the electrical system under load, but they can also arise from loose cable connections or other onboard overvoltage events. Without protection, these voltage spikes often lead to a complete failure of the alternator – the Spike Ground Protection prevents precisely that.
Advantages
- Protects alternator diodes and internal regulator from overvoltage spikes
- Indispensable when converting to lithium/LiFePO4 batteries with BMS load shedding
- Provides additional protection against loose connections or other voltage spikes in the electrical system
- Manufacturer-independent – compatible with alternators of any brand
- Compact, robust design based on the same operating principle as Balmar's larger Alternator Protection Modules (APM)
- Simple, cost-effective retrofit without intervention in the alternator itself
Technical Data & Compatibility
- TSP-12: for 12-volt electrical systems, rated up to 10 A
- TSP-24: for 24-volt electrical systems, rated up to 10 A
- Mounts between B+ and B- directly on the alternator's rear
- Compatible with alternators from all manufacturers, not just Balmar models
- Same operating principle as the larger APM modules, which can absorb voltage spikes up to 60 V and overcurrent spikes of over 200 A in 12-volt systems, and feature an optical/acoustic alarm display in case of damage
Does the spike protection fit every alternator?
Yes: The TSP is mounted between B+ and B- on the alternator's rear, regardless of the brand, and therefore works with alternators of any make – even with third-party brands that do not have their own spike protection.
Area of Application
The Spike Ground Protection is particularly recommended for anyone converting their onboard battery to lithium/LiFePO4, as the BMS load shedding of these batteries is one of the most common causes of voltage spikes and alternator damage. However, the component also offers sensible, inexpensive protection for classic lead-acid electrical systems with older wiring or potentially loose connections.
Choose the appropriate variant (TSP-12 or TSP-24) depending on your electrical system voltage and permanently protect your alternator from costly spike damage. For questions regarding the correct selection or installation, the philippi team will be happy to advise you.
