Balmar's AltMount© serpentine pulley conversion kit allows the use of powerful high-current 6-Series and XT-Series alternators on Volvo-Penta diesel engines that are factory-equipped with only a single V-belt. The patented design (U.S. Patent Nos. 8,939,855 and D654,778) mounts over the existing crankshaft and water pump pulleys, allowing the use of a wider serpentine belt with a significantly larger contact area.
Advantages
- Improved power transmission between belt and pulley
- Reduced vibration on engine and alternator
- Less belt wear and belt dust
- Quieter, smoother engine operation
- Custom designed for the respective Volvo-Penta engine type
- Includes complete mounting hardware and two serpentine belts
For which engines is this kit suitable?
This pulley kit is available in several variants precisely tailored to the respective Volvo-Penta engine type, including for the following engines:
- Volvo 2001, 2002, 2003(T) with 3 pulleys → Kit 48-VSP-2001
- Volvo 2001, 2002, 2003(T) with 2 pulleys → Kit 48-VSP-2001R
- Volvo D2-55A, B, C, D, E, F → Kit 48-VSP-D2-A

Overall, a wide selection of Volvo-Penta engine models is available for this product. Please select the appropriate version for your engine in the variant selection on this product page.
Why is my original V-belt no longer sufficient?
A single V-belt can transmit only up to approx. 100 A of alternator power in a 12V electrical system, and only up to approx. 45 A in a 24V system. If a more powerful alternator is retrofitted – for example, from approx. 120 A at 12V or any model of the Balmar XT-Series – the contact area of the narrow V-belt is no longer sufficient. A serpentine pulley with a larger belt contact area reliably transmits the necessary higher power take-off (PTO), provided the engine is not already factory-equipped with double V-belts or serpentine belts.
Scope of delivery & Installation
Each AltMount© kit contains all the hardware required for installation, as well as two suitable serpentine belts. The system is installed by placing and fastening the conversion pulleys over the existing crankshaft and water pump pulleys. Since engine dimensions can vary slightly depending on the year of manufacture and version, minor adjustments to the mounting or screw length may be necessary in individual cases.
